Finale Agenda

After going through rigorous regional and national round of racing, top 15 females from the country will race in the grand finale of AWS DeepRacer Women’s League - India 2021. The event starts at 12:00PM on 21st April.

Shaili Chopra is the founder of SheThePeople.TV, India’s biggest platform for real stories of real women. She is a Stanford Draper Hills Fellow and was named Impact's 40 Under 40 in 2020. In April 2017, she received the prestigious Vital Voices fellowship, instituted by Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright.

Shaili has a prolific journalism career, which has now furthered her into entrepreneurship, allowing her to use her news skills to create meaningful content for the web. In her last role, she was the Senior Editor and Lead Anchor at ET NOW, Economic Times Business News Channel and earlier with India’s largest tv network NDTV. In March 2016 Shaili was announced one of India’s Top 50 Most Influential Women in Media, Marketing and Advertising by IMPACT Magazine.

Shaili received India’s highest honour in journalism, the Ramnath Goenka Award for Best in Business Journalism. She also won the Media Foundation Best Business Anchor Award for 2010 and, in the same year, the Federation of Indian Industry (FICCI) gave her the Young Women’s Achiever Award for her contribution to media. She also won the News Television Award for the Best Reporter in India in 2007.

Prof K. VijayRaghavan is a distinguished professor in the field of developmental genetics and former director of the National Centre of Biological Sciences. His fields of specialization are developmental biology, genetics, and neurogenetics.

Education

Prof. VijayRaghavan graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1975. He completed his doctoral work in 1983 in the field of Molecular Biology and holds a PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research

Initial Career

Worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology, after which he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, where he was instrumental in establishing the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru, under the aegis of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1992.

Groundbreaking Research Work

He spearheaded groundbreaking research to understand the important principles and mechanisms that control the nervous system and muscles during development, and how these neuromuscular systems direct specific locomotor behaviours.

Professional Details
Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India since 2018, he has served as Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru, where he continues as a Distinguished Professor. He was Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India between January 2013 to January 2018.

About AWS DeepRacer Women's
League - India 2021

The AWS DeepRacer Women’s League in India will help foster community learning and help with the early adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning technology for a more diverse workforce of the future. The initiative aims to bring together women students to learn collaboratively and get hands on with machine learning through a cloud-based virtual racing simulator. During the course of the competition, participants get the opportunity to build their ML models and compete on tracks virtually while diving deep into advanced reinforcement learning and upskilling with ML.

The competition will be held virtually.

You have to participate individually in this competition.

The evaluation criteria shall be different for each round. It will depend on various factors like, ranking method, number of laps required for a model to pass evaluation, off-track penalty, etc. The details of the same shall be shared in the invitation to race with the eligible participants.

The event is currently restricted only to students from Indian academic institutions.

No, there is no limit to the number of candidates who can participate from an institution.

There is no video available currently for this event. However, you will get a step-by-step communication through emails to get you started with the event. Meanwhile, you can check the AWS DeepRacer league 2021 video here.

You will learn the basics of reinforcement learning which is an area of machine learning, and in the process will also understand more about how artificial intelligence works as you complete the ‘Machine Learning Scientist’ career pathway on AWS Educate.

Yes, you can still participate. You will receive the invitation to attend enablement session to learn the basics of machine learning with us. Until then, kindly complete the ‘Machine Learning Scientist’ career pathway on AWS Educate to get started. You can also refer to Get Started section of the website for self-service resources.

The last date to register for the event is 5 April, 2021.

There is no registration fee for the event.

While it is preferred to have an institution domain email id, it is not compulsory. Please fill the registration form on the event site. If you are not a member of the AWS Educate program, you will receive details to sign-up via email.

You should be minimum 18 years of age to participate in the event.

Having prior experience in machine learning may help, but it is not mandatory as long as the participant has inclination towards learning. The participants would have to register to AWS Educate and complete the ‘Machine Learning Scientist’ career pathway and AWS DeepRacer badge. We would recommend that participants attend the enablement session to get started with the service.

Yes, female students who are registered in an academic institution in India are eligible to participate in the event.

No, you do not need to download any additional software to participate in the event. The candidates are expected to have a computer or laptop with minimum internet speed of Two Mbps along with the latest version of the standard browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome etc., to take part in this competition.

No, there won’t be any coding test to shortlist candidates to participate in the competition. However, you would need to complete the ‘Machine Learning Scientist’ career pathway and AWS DeepRacer badge on AWS Educate.

Yes, as a prerequisite to the event you would have to complete the ‘Machine Learning Scientist’ career pathway and AWS DeepRacer badge on AWS Educate.

Considering that you will move up to the Grand Finale round, we recommend that you attend two enablement sessions and dedicate roughly Two hours to train/evaluate each model. You can then work on refining the models in an iterative fashion as long as the race is open.

For students the program offers a self-paced, no-cost curriculum with materials designed to accelerate cloud-related learning endeavors. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this event is completely virtual for the safety of our participants. Please note that the winners will be showcased on the Live stream of the Grand Finale of this event.
